Sonoma Garden Park's Harvest Festival returns Saturday, free and full of pickles
Sonoma Ecology Center's annual family festival runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 3: live music, farm games, a quick-pickle competition, a poetry pop-up, and the 6.1-acre public garden at the height of fall.

SONOMA: The most low-key big Saturday of the fall belongs to Sonoma Garden Park. Sonoma Ecology Center's annual Harvest Festival returns this Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 6.1-acre public garden at 19996 7th St. E. Admission is free and the day is open to all.
The program reads like the Ecology Center's greatest-hits list: local music, hands-on workshops, kid-friendly activities and farm games, local food and beverages, and a pickle-making competition. The center is inviting home fermenters to enter their quick pickles in the culinary contest, and it is calling for student poets, grades K through 12, to read on the festival stage from 10 to 11 a.m. for a Poetry Pop-Up on the theme A Garden Grows.

The park itself is the main attraction. Stewarded by the Ecology Center a few minutes from downtown, Sonoma Garden Park is a working community garden and public green space open daily from sunrise to sunset, with garden plots, a children's garden, and Saturday harvest markets through December.
The festival doubles as a fundraiser for the park's ongoing care. The center lists a long roster of sponsors backing the day, from Sonoma Water and the county agricultural preservation and open space district to Nugget Markets, Sonoma County Farm Bureau and Zero Waste Sonoma.
Practical notes: the event runs 10 to 3, and admission is free. Bring a reusable bag; the Saturday harvest market tables will be out too.
