SONOMA: Sutter Health Plan is expanding its commercial health insurance service area into Sonoma Valley, the insurer announced October 1. Coverage in the newly added ZIP codes is effective now for small-group plans; large groups and individuals and families gain access on January 1, 2027.

The expansion adds new ZIP codes in Placer, Sonoma and Sutter counties, plus portions of Amador and Yuba counties, according to the insurer's announcement. In Sonoma Valley, the new footprint includes ZIP code 95476, covering the city of Sonoma as well as Boyes Hot Springs, El Verano, Eldridge, Fetters Hot Springs-Agua Caliente and Glen Ellen.

"Our goal is to make it easier for people to access the care they need, when and where they need it," said Aparna Abburi, CEO of Sutter Health Plan. "By expanding our service area, we're giving more communities access to Sutter's full network of doctors, hospitals and care teams while providing employers and consumers with more coverage options."

The insurer says the move is its sixth service-area growth since it began serving Northern California in 2014, and the plan now serves commercial customers across 18 counties. The expansion was also reported to respond to requests from local employers, brokers and community leaders for more health plan options in the valley.

What changes, and when

For small-business employers, coverage in the new ZIP codes became effective October 1, 2026. Employees in the 95476 ZIP code can now be offered Sutter Health Plan options, and large groups plus individual and family shoppers in these communities gain access with the January 1, 2027 effective date.

Sutter Health Plan points to two outside recognitions as part of its pitch: a 4-out-of-5-star rating from the National Committee for Quality Assurance for 2026, its fifth straight year at 4 stars or higher, and Sutter Health's ranking at No. 2 nationally among large health systems on Premier's 15 Top Health Systems list. The Post will follow up if local brokers or employers report on early uptake.
